The minister was addressing a rural gathering at the concluding function of the 26th Capt Manjit Singh Gill Memorial Gold Cup Hockey and Silver Cup Kabbaddi Tournament, organized at Dhamot village today, about 35 kms from here. Majithia said that in the new policy, the state government also wants to promote rural sports in a big way, and new sports stadiums would be constructed. He said that funds amounting to Rs 2 crore are being spent to purchase sports equipment, and for the upkeep of stadiums in the state during this year. Majithia said that to provide international-level training facilities, 1,600 sports wings are being set up. Budding players will be selected at the primary school level, and continuous coaching would be provided in the sports academies to nurture them as national and international players. Majithia said that the government will also encourage national and international-level players who win medals for the country. The minister appreciated the contribution of the rural sports clubs in organizing the tournament. He highlighted that these clubs are playing a vital role in mobilizing the youth away from drugs and intoxicants. Referring to the demands of the village, the minister announced that Dhamot village will be covered under the new water supply and sanitation scheme, for which 90 per cent expenditure will be borne by government and 10 per cent by the village. He also distributed the prizes to the winners,and announced a grant of Rs 51,00 for the Sports Cub of Dhamot village. Speaking at the function, former minister Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal demanded a proper water supply and sanitation scheme for the village, and liberal grants for the development projects in the villages of Payal Constituency.
